Independent auto appraiser vs. the $349 claim kit
Updated · General information, not legal advice
Both give you what an adjuster actually responds to: a written, evidence-backed valuation of your car. They differ in how the car is examined, who shows up if the dispute goes to the policy's appraisal clause or to court, and what you pay. Here is a plain comparison, including the cases where a local appraiser is the better call.
| Option | Local independent appraiser | The $349 claim kit |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Set by each appraiser. Written reports are commonly priced in the hundreds of dollars; appraisal-clause representation, travel and court testimony are often billed on top. | $349 flat for the report and demand letters. Never a percentage of your settlement. |
| How the car is examined | Often an in-person inspection of the vehicle. | Built from your repair invoice, photos, history report and the insurer's valuation. No in-person inspection. |
| Market evidence | Varies by appraiser; ask to see the comparables before you pay. | Every comparable listed so an adjuster can check each line. |
| Who signs | The appraiser, under whatever credentials they hold. Some states license damage appraisers. | An ASCAA-certified appraiser. |
| Appraisal clause (your own policy) | Can usually serve as the appraiser you appoint and attend inspections in person. | The report is written so an appointed appraiser or umpire can verify it. If you need someone to appear in person, a local appraiser may fit better. |
| Court testimony | Some appraisers testify, usually for an added fee. | Not included. |
| Who presents the claim | You (or your attorney) present the appraiser's report. | You (or your attorney) present the report, using the included demand letters. |
When a local independent appraiser is the better choice
- Classic, custom, modified or exotic vehicles, where condition and originality need hands-on inspection.
- Your state requires a licensed damage appraiser for the document you need (Massachusetts, for example, licenses auto damage appraisers).
- You have invoked the appraisal clause and want your appointed appraiser to attend inspections and meet the insurer's appraiser in person.
- The dispute is headed to litigation and you need an expert who will testify.
When the $349 kit fits
- A modern, mass-market vehicle where value is set by comparable listings rather than by hands-on condition grading.
- A third-party diminished value claim against the at-fault driver's insurer, or a total-loss actual cash value dispute where the insurer's comparables are the problem.
- You are comfortable presenting the report yourself and want a known, flat price up front.
What neither option can do
No appraiser or report can promise a result. The insurer decides what it pays, an appraisal panel or court decides disputes, and every claim turns on its own vehicle, market and policy. Be wary of anyone who guarantees a number or takes a percentage of your settlement for work that is really a valuation.
Flat fee
$349
A written valuation of your car, signed by an ASCAA-certified appraiser, with every comparable listed so an adjuster can check each line, plus demand letters you send yourself. One flat $349, never a percentage of your settlement. If you recover less than $500, the fee is refunded under our guarantee terms.
One case, results vary
2019 Tesla Model 3 total loss
$17,262 → $29,155
Our founder's own total-loss claim. The insurer's first valuation was $17,262. After a dispute built on comparable sales and a documented valuation, the agreed value was $29,155. That is a total-loss case, not a diminished-value case, and every claim turns on its own vehicle, market and insurer. Read the case.

- How much does an independent auto appraiser cost?
- Each appraiser sets their own price. Among appraisal firms that published a price in September 2026, written diminished value or total-loss reports ran from about $275 to $550, and a few charge a share of any increase for appraisal-clause work. Services such as appraisal-clause representation, travel or court testimony are often billed separately. Ask for the full fee in writing before you hire anyone.
- Is a $349 report as good as a local appraiser?
- For a modern vehicle where the dispute is about market value, a comparable-backed written report is the evidence either option produces. For classic or custom vehicles, in-person appraisal-clause work, licensed damage appraisals, or court testimony, a local appraiser is often the better fit.
- Will either one negotiate with the insurer for me?
- An appraiser prepares evidence; you or your attorney present the claim. In some states only licensed public adjusters or attorneys may negotiate a claim on your behalf.
